urban occupation : action

short project with visiting scholar, Rochus Urban Hinkel, from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, and with Hélène Frichot (RMIT University Melbourne). In this ‚active‘ workshop students will engage with public space in a real sense, one could describe it as a scale 1:1 ‚active‘ design. We will interact with space and public through active inhabitation, provocation, events, happenings, installations and so forth; in order to discover the diversity and potential of a given public space.vielflieger-demo

The design workshop will be tought as a two week intensive course. The process and results will be discussed with guest critics.

urban occupation : design

design studio with visiting scholar, Rochus Urban Hinkel, from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.

One of the essential characteristics of urbanity is public space. Freely accessible for everyone at any given time it is as much an aesthetic and architectural space as it is a political and social place. Public space is threatened through commercialization and privatization, often driven by the lack of public financial resources. These conditions have transformed public space from a political space and place of community and identity to either abandoned or commercialized anonymous non-places.

The design proposal within this studio will deal with aesthetic and architectural qualities as much as it will interrogate the political and social conditions. You will be encouraged to create a space that allows for political ownership, as well as for adaptation and change in order to create a place with multiple identities, and a diversity of urban life and active inhabitation.134187849_0020e370af2
